Sierra Club The Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization, whose members work together to protect communities and the planet.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Sierra Club is a non-profit (Internal Revenue Code 501(c) (4)), member-supported, public interest organization that promotes conservation of the natural environment by influencing public policy decisions: legislative, administrative, legal and electoral. The organization includes 750,000 members in 65 chapters and more than 400 local groups.

Sierra Club’s mission is to: 1) explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the earth; 2) practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources; 3) educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and 4) use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

For more than 25 years, Sierra Club has worked closely with labor allies, including joint efforts on specific corporate campaigns, and on such landmark legislation as Superfund, Right To Know, Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act – as well as other public policies that protect both workers and the environment. And, for more than 10 years the Club has engaged with labor leaders to find worker friendly solutions to global warming. Sierra Club has also fought for fair trade rules during the Fast Track, NAFTA, and CAFTA trade fights.

CARL POPE has been Executive Director of Sierra Club since 1992. A veteran leader in the environmental movement, Mr. Pope has been with the Sierra Club for nearly thirty years. In that time he has served as Associate Conservation Director, Political Director and Conservation Director.

During Mr. Pope's tenure as Executive Director, Sierra Club added 150,000 new members, growing to 700,000 of your friends and neighbors. The Club's importance extends beyond numbers, though. The Aspen Institute, after surveying every member of Congress and key federal officials, named the Sierra Club as the most influential environmental organization in Washington, D.C.
